SAIDIA ZANZIBAR

Why We Do This How To Help Who We Are Where It Goes

Where does the money go?

Our goal is the support of the relief effort undertaken by the Zanzibari Government, however, we will not be disbursing our money through those channels.

There is a dedicated disbursement committee working on this on a daily basis, however until the various registration processes are finished on 3rd October 2011, we are not in a position to understand the true extent of the tragedy.

We have sent Committee members (at their own expense) on a fact-finding mission to Pemba, where they have been liaising with Uwamsho, as well as Istiqama, Zanzibar Outreach Programme and Government Agencies, to co-ordinate our response with all involved to avoid duplication of efforts.

We are united with our donors' wishes to find lasting, sustainable support and despite our desire to act swiftly, must respect the processes required in order to fulfil this mandate appropriately. Patience is key to understanding what has taken place, co-operation and co-ordination vital to ensuring we get the response right, for those who need it most.

We are currently investigating three key areas, as follows:-

Emergency Relief - Provision of emergency requirements to victims and families currently displaced, injured or searching for loved ones. Resupply of exhausted stock to hospitals, clinics and relief agencies. Assistance with accommodation and relocation of displaced families and individuals.

Our first donation is documented on our Facebook page. See http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.247851611917818.52802.245850125451300&type=1

We are intending to make another donation, this time of medical supplies, on Friday 30th September 2011, and will be posting full notification of details once they have been confirmed.

Family Support - Understanding how to contribute to the payment of tuition and livelihood for those who have lost their principal earners, finding families for orphans.

We are currently working with Zanzibar Outreach Programme, documenting the effects of the tragedy at a local level, through an existing health monitoring scheme that they run through schools.

Once registration is completed on 3rd October, we will take steps to financially support 100 (one hundred) primary and secondary school students for two years, candidates taken from those orphaned or without primary earners as a result of the tragedy.

The grant will cover the contribution towards tuition fees at Government Schools, uniforms, transport and books. Their progress will be monitored by the existing ZOP network with regular reports to confirm attendance and school progress. we hope to continue the scheme with ongoing private donations at a later date.

Agency Disbursement - We are now accepting applications from registered Zanzibari/Pemban NGO's looking to provide medium to long-term community support for those affected by the tragedy.
Applications will require budgetary planning, sustainable goals and ongoing auditing by SaidiaZanzibar.
